Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) in sustainable manner is an inherent element for public health and sanitation. The management of MSW lies inside the legislative and administrative authority of states according to the Constitution of India (CoI). But the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act (CAA) which was passed in 1993 shifted all responsibilities for management of MSW to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). Although for the management of MSW, ULBs have the insufficient infrastructure, funds, technology and manpower. Consequently, an urgent need arose for a well promised and assured development of local governance or ULBs which includes all local agencies, stakeholders, civil society organization and private sector. Furthermore, the aim of sustainable development goals (SDGs) is not satisfied with existing practices for management of MSW. So a strict action is mandatory for sustainable management of MSW in spite of existing unorganized practices for SWM. Sustainable Management of Municipal Solid Waste (SMMSW) is well-organized concept including several different dimensions into matrix like strategy, planning and policy (legal, political, sociocultural and institutional) during acknowledgment for active participation of stakeholders. Essential ingredients for SMMSW include appropriate operational management; financial management and management of operational hurdles.
